The Trout was first designed for fishing in the highland lakes in Tasmania. But much to the delight of designer, Dennis Witt, its rowing performance exceeded expectations – it runs beautifully. I is part of the Witt Design range of boats so its plywood kit is accurately CNC cut, built over a similarly accurate mold, and designe for home building.
The Trout has many endearing features:
● It is a very stable and well suited to fly fishing.
● It is well balanced for single person rowing or a rower and passenger (forward and aft seats).
● It runs well between strokes and makes for very satisfying fixed seat rowing.
● It tracks well, into, across and with the wind enhancing a great rowing experience.
● The flat bottom is well suited to shallow water-ways but, also, is a bonus for easier building.
● Designing the mold and ply kit had a deliberate focus on makaing boat building achievable for novice builders or, simply, very satisfying for experienced builders.
● The hull and buoyancy tank seats are made from 6mm plywood which keeps the boat light. A thin sheath of fibreglass on the bottom adds strenght and abrasion resistance to deal with the inevitable log or rock when trout fishing.
● The hull form is one that many will remember seeing in small esturine fishing boats. They proved themselves to be well suited to the task, often with heavy nets piled on the stern.
